Opportunities exist for those interested in farming.

It is important that systems and practice exist to foster young farmer talent, these include:

  • Education programmes.
  • The Land Mobility Service and land mobility options.
  • Young farmer supports.
  • However, it is important that young farmers are equipped with the correct skills. The Irish Farm Managers Association believes that there is insufficient practical focus in current training programmes.

This point also came up at the Positive Farmers Forum where mentors recommended that all young farmers should develop their skills and experience away from the home farm.

A greater focus also needs to be put on developing the ladder of opportunity, encouraging young farmers to grow by small steps, gradually building up equity and experience.

Those who have grown from a manageable base and in small incremental steps have been most successful in developing their farming careers, regardless as to whether this career is in farm management, developing the family farm or farming without owning land.

Finally, it is important that the Young Farmer supports continue to be prioritised.

We need young farmers and young farmers need incentives.

Processing of TAMS and Young Farmer Schemes must receive priority; those availing of these schemes are the brave young farmers who are making things happen at farm level and as such most exposed to cashflow difficulties caused by delayed payments.
