The Sheerin Family Country Band play their monthly gig in Cooney’s Hotel in Ballymahon on Tuesday night, 18 November. Their special guest on this occasion is Lisa McHugh, who performed with Gene Watson at the Grand Ole Opry two years ago.

The Sheerins have established this regular gig as one of the top of its kind in the midlands. Several of the top names in Irish country music have dropped by and performed at these shows, while American singer Joni Harms has also graced the occasion.

Who know just who might pop in to join Lisa and the Sheerins in Cooney’s Hotel next Tuesday night. That’s the beauty of these occasions. The show starts at 10pm and admission is free.

Kathy hits the right notes

Meath singer-songwriter Kathy Crinion is creating quite a stir with her new single, I’m Just Not That Lonely Anymore. The lady from Trim delivers a beautiful version of the song, with strong resonances of Karen Carpenter shining through at times.

This number is certain to introduce her to a whole new audience. Country Sound extends best wishes to Kathy, an emerging new talent on the circuit.

Jason Travers video shoot

Scenes for inclusion in the new DVD by Jason Travers will be filmed in the Welcome Inn Hotel in Castlebar on this Thursday night, 13 November. Jason, who has enjoyed much success with his version of Carmelita, has a new album almost ready to roll. The young Galway singer is looking forward to many of his friends joining him for this special night.

Shannon’s Corner

Seamus Shannon is the long time host of the popular Sunday Show on Shannonside-Northern Sound Radio. Shannon’s Corner goes out between 12 noon and 2pm and has amassed a loyal clientele over the years. Seamus is a also a hugely talented musician and singer and it is great to see him back doing some regular shows again.

Big night in Kilkenny

Watch out for a special night in the Springhill Hotel in Kilkenny on Tuesday, 16 December. A host of artists will join Johnny Barry from KCLR who has chosen 23 favourite songs for inclusion on a CD called Johnny’s Favourites, which will be launched on the night in support of the local St Vincent de Paul Society.

“We are planning on making this a very special night,” says Johnny. “I am hoping that many of my good friends from the scene will join me on the night in Kilkenny.”

James for Ballinlough

Carrick National School, Ballinlough, Co Roscommon, will present country and gospel singer James Kilbane in concert at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Ballinlough, on Saturday evening, 29 November at 8pm.

The cost to the small school for the Astroturf development will run to the region of €100,000.

It is hoped that the sports playing area will also be available to the wider public and local community once the development is complete.
