Comment: IFA national pigs committee chair Pat O’Flaherty said that market demand building across the EU and Christmas orders are now driving demand, resulting in further increases. Danish prices increased by a further 3c/kg and Germany by another 2c/kg for this week’s pigs. Sow prices are also increasing (4c/kg in Germany and 3.3c/kg in the Netherlands), which is always a very positive development. Irish prices were unchanged, but with EU prices now moving on, Irish prices could fall behind the EU average. Blame for poorer prices is assigned to certain market purchasers and the IFA will be DNA-testing meat to ensure its full traceability.
