The Irish Salers Cattle Society display in Block 2, Row 19, Stand 435, is a must as there is so much to see.

The new Salers for Suckling Journal will be launched. This is a very informative 60-page book all about Salers, with great articles and photos from farmers using Salers and showing why you should have the breed on your farm. This is a free book, so come along and get a copy.

On display will be Salers pedigree stock, including Salers cows with bull calves at foot, and Salers pedigree heifers that were winners from the regional shows.

In the crossbred section on display will be various animals including a Charolais first-calved heifer with a Salers bull calf and a Salers pedigree cow with Charolais twin calves and also cross-bred Salers heifers. There has always been a big interest in seeing the Salers animals and how good the breed can be when crossbred. It is a great chance for farmers to talk to the breeders and discuss their own situations and how to use the breed best on their farm. With the BDGP scheme, using Salers can help you achieve your requirements the fastest way possible. There will be members of the council there each day to help answer any questions you may have.

A raffle will take place on the final day for a 19-month-old pedigree Salers heifer or €1,500 cash.

Tickets cost €2 each or three tickets for €5. These are available over the three days at the stand.

The society will also hold its annual cross-bred sale in Gort Mart, Co Clare, on Thursday 27 October at 6pm. This sale always attracts a large number of top-quality breeding females and so is well worth going to if you’re in the market for Salers cattle.

Finally, the year will finish with the national calf championships, which will take place at Ballinasloe Show on Saturday 1 October.
