John Byrne, a fifth generation farmer in Coolnasmear, Colligan, Dungarvan, Co Waterford, took over the running of the farm from his father in 2002. ‘We milk 156 cows at the moment, grown from 80.’

Problems

‘When you have more animals, there’s always more problems. It’s just about being ahead of the game. Hygiene has to be a priority, if it’s not, you’re going to run into problems.’

Endorsement

‘I have used other products to seal the teats, but when the cows calve down you wouldn’t find the sealer in the teat, but with Boviseal this is not the case. You’ll always have the sealer present, the same as the day that it was put in. That to me says it all about Boviseal, as your sealer is still present. That is why I will continue to use it.’

‘Boviseal gives you peace of mind when you dry off. You’re not worried about having cases of mastitis because Boviseal eradicates the problem. You can relax knowing that the cow will calve down next spring 100% perfect.’

Advice

‘Don’t dry off too many cows at the one time. Give yourself adequate time to do it. We wear gloves, use teat spray and an anti-septic. Using Boviseal in conjunction with this works very well for us.’
