There has been a significant recovery in prices in the marts after last week’s depressed market. Some mart managers reported a lift in the trade, with strong activity coming from both factory agents and live exporters.

Factory-fit lambs weighing 45kg to 48kg are selling from €95 to €106/head, or €50 to €58 over the weight. Prices are back up on average €5/head.

There has been a lift in demand for ram lambs among feeders and exporters. Some feeders are looking for forward store ram lambs that will have a short turnaround time for selling by the end of this month in anticipation of Eid al-Adha, the second of two Muslim holidays, which starts on 11 September this year.

Lowland-bred store lambs weighing 35kg to 38kg are selling for €70 to €89/head, or €35 to €51 over the weight. Short-keep store lambs weighing 40kg to 43kg are making from €90 to €94/head or €50 to €51 over.

The ewe lamb trade is starting to heat up now. Some top-quality ewe lambs are making in excess of €100 to €120/head with prices influenced by weight. On average, ewe lambs are commanding a €10 to €15/head premium over their wether counterparts.

Breeding ewe sales are also kicking off. In the smaller sales to date, hoggets are selling from €145/head to €185/head. Young two-year-old breeding ewes are moving at €120/head to €165/head. Top prices for cull ewes are now sitting at €110/head. Medium fleshed ewes are selling from €97 to €105/head.
