Spring lambs have experienced a change of fortunes, with mart prices rising by €5 to €8 over the last week.

Spring lambs weighing between 44kg and 48kg have been achieving from €118 to €128 on average.

Factory quotes have also increased by 10c/kg to 20c/kg, with prices paid to producers ranging from €6.10/kg to €6.15/kg. A 5c/kg to 10c/kg bonus is available for those with high numbers or selling through groups.

Meanwhile, the Department of Agriculture sheep census returns for December 2016 show breeding ewe numbers have risen by 140,000 to 2.64m head.
