The measure was first introduced in early March to help EU producers deal with low prices across six categories of pigmeat products caused by the introduction of the Russian ban onto EU imports in August last year.

According to GlobalMeatNews, the EU Commission believes private storage aid is no longer needed due to the fact that EU market prices have stabilised and the uptake by operators has dropped to "modest volumes".

Since the measure was introduced, Denmark, Spain and Germany saw the greatest uptake in terms of using the private storage aid option whereas Poland, Italy and the Netherlands recorded the lowest uptake.
