A further meeting on a revised Beef and Lamb Quality Assurance Scheme was held this month and progress made on a number of issues.
The meeting brought together the technical advisory committee of the stakeholders drawing up the new scheme.
The meeting reached broad agreement that the revised scheme would include:
ADVERTISEMENT
a close-out system under which a farmer would, after an audit, have 30 days in which to correct problems and notify his or her auditor of same;
an average length of all audits not to exceed 90 minutes;
no reference to market specifications for either beef or lamb;
no reference to EID for sheep.
Bord Bia, which operates the scheme, is now considering these proposals.
Among the organisations represented on the technical advisory committee are IFA and ICMSA, Meat Industry Ireland, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, Teagasc, UCD and ICBF.
