Minister Simon Coveney has launched a consultation process in relation to the climate change legislative proposals.

Agriculture is one of the sectors that must devise a mitigation plan to feed into the process. A comprehensive discussion document is available on the Department of Agriculture’s website. The bill was only unveiled by Environment Minister Alan Kelly last week, so Minister Coveney has wasted little time in beginning public engagement.

IFA Environment Committee chairman Harold Kingston has urged individual farmers to express their views. “It’s vital that as many farmers as possible take part in this process and make their views known,” he said.

“There is a small but vocal lobby that would shackle Irish farming in ‘green-tape’ given any opportunity, moving food production to less efficient countries, and compromising European food security. We must make our voices heard.”
