Name: Deirdre O’Shea.
Age: 28
Position: Agri Aware
executive director
Industry: Agri food
First job: O’Sheas pig farm (I hadn’t much choice on this one).
Previous jobs: Agri food and drink manager, Ulster Bank. Executive IFA National Pigmeat and Forestry Committees.
Biggest inspiration: My parents. Also my close friends, who are all very ambitious and successful in their own fields.
Favourite job: A few hours in the farrowing house would be my preference.
Favourite part of your job: Communicating a positive message on behalf of the Irish agri-food industry. Meeting new people. Leading a team of very energetic and passionate individuals. Being surrounded by a strong team is key to success, in my opinion.
Turning point of your career: My appointment to Agri Aware, over 12 months ago.
Lowest point of your career: Leaving a strong network of work colleagues in IFA. It takes time to adapt when you leave a company or organisation you have worked in for a period of time.
Hopes for the future: Short to medium term – continue to grow Agri Aware and ensure we deliver a positive message in an effective way on behalf of Ireland’s agri-food industry.
Best advise you could give someone new to the industry: Never give up – you will meet challenges and barriers throughout your career, but it’s how you deal with these that will allow you to progress. Always be honest and transparent.
Secondary school: St Leo’s College, Carlow.
College: UCD.
Best subject in school: Accounting.
Car you drive: VW, Golf.
