Counties Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois and Offaly will be affected, and the warning is in place until 1pm on Saturday.

The rainfall warning comes after a long dry spell across the country, with farmers taking to the fields for silage as temperatures hit the high teens.

Further rain is expected in many places on Friday night, with some locally heavy bursts.

The rain is forecast to gradually retreat northeastwards overnight and it will become mainly dry over Munster and west Connacht, with some clear spells, but elsewhere further outbreaks of rain.

Patches of mist and fog are also forecast tonight, with lowest temperatures of six to 10 degrees. Light to moderate southwest to south winds freshening along the southwest coast by dawn.

Saturday

Current indications for Saturday suggest that there will be some lingering rain about Ulster and north Leinster at first tomorrow morning but clearing northeastwards.

However, another band of rain, with some heavy bursts, is to spread from the southwest in the late morning, tracking northeastwards over the country during the afternoon and evening with a slight risk of thunder.

Scattered showers will then follow. Top temperatures of 14 to 17 degrees.

Outlook

Mixed weather is expected to continue through much of the coming days, with the potential for some high rainfall accumulations over the next few days, bringing a risk of localised flooding.
