This year’s second shipment of live cattle for Turkey will load next week.

A livestock boat arrives in Ireland on Thursday and will be loaded with over 3,000 young bulls early next week by Purcell Brothers.

Loading will be carried out under the supervision of Department of Agriculture vets and also representatives of the Turkish buyers. The bulls will go for further feeding on Turkish farms.

To be cleared for loading for export, animals must pass a lengthy list of checks.

These range from animals being in full health on the day, having no horns, to being tested and vaccinated for various diseases, and quarantined. Cattle must meet requirements on age, weight, farm residency and movements.

Last week, some 1,500 breeding heifers arrived in Turkey in excellent health, exported by John Hallissey.

Both Purcells and John Hallissey hope to have further shipments of cattle over coming months.

In addition, other Irish exporters continue to negotiate with the Turkish government authorities and with Turkish importers seeking to agree further contracts.
