This is a very practical apron as it is very easy to slip on and off with crossover straps at the back, and it wraps around the child’s body, giving lots of protection from all those pesky splashes and spills. It is also reversible and if you can make it in linen and cotton, like I did here, it will withstand lots of wear and washes.

List of requirements

  • • 1 yard main fabric in lightweight linen.
  • • 1 yard contrasting cotton fabric in polka dot.
  • • 5 yards of bias binding.
  • • 4 buttons.
  • • Download pattern and print: To make this apron, you will first need to download the pattern from www.farmersjournal.ie/countryliving
  • • The pattern for the apron is made up of six A4-size pages. These need to be taped together and then trimmed to form the paper pattern.
  • • Follow the instructions for downloading the pattern and then cut out four paper pattern pieces, i.e. A apron, B pocket, C bow and D tab.
  • Steps to follow

1 Following instructions on pattern, cut out pattern pieces A, B, C and D from the main fabric in linen and the contrasting fabric in polka dot.

2 Make pocket: Fold pocket piece in half, right sides together. Sew down both sides and across the bottom, taking a ¼” seam, and leaving a gap of 3” along the bottom. Turn right side out and press. Slip stitch opening closed. Repeat with other fabric. You now have two pockets, one in linen and one in polka dot.

3 Make bow: Fold bow in half, right sides together. Sew down both sides taking a ¼” seam and across the bottom leaving a gap of 2”. Turn right side out and press. Slip stitch opening closed. Thread your needle and make a knot at one end, then using a running stitch gather the bow in the centre, wrap the thread around the centre a couple of times to secure, tie off. To make tab, turn under, press and fold a ½” hem at each side of tab. Fold in half again. Wrap tab around the centre of the bow and secure at the back with hand stitching. Repeat with other fabric. You now have two bows, one in linen and one in polka dot.

4 Follow guidelines on the pattern for placement of pocket and bow. Pin polka dot pocket to front of linen apron. Using the edge of the pocket as a guide, sew down both sides and across the bottom stitching 1/8” in from the edge. Pin polka dot bow to front of linen apron and secure by hand stitching in place. Repeat for other apron, this time adding linen pocket and linen bow to polka dot apron. You now have two aprons, both with pocket and bow attached.

5 Place one apron on top of the other, right sides out and pin all around the perimeter. For instructions on adding bias binding, see below. Starting at one side of neck, attach bias binding to neck edge only. Starting at armhole, attach bias binding all around perimeter of apron, finishing at other arm hole edge. Attach bias binding to each shoulder edge.

6 Making sure that straps are crossed over at the back, bring straps around to the front. Sew button to the front, linen side, taking just one or two stitches, then place second button (on polka dot side) behind the front button and sew through both buttons.

7 To attach bias binding: Apply bias binding to the back of the apron first on the polka dot side. Open the bias binding and align the edge of the bias with the edge of the fabric, right sides together. Stitch in the fold. Bring the binding around to the front of the fabric on the linen side and stitch close to the edge.
