After a cold night of heavy rain on Monday, it was understandable if the NPA was feeling slightly apprehensive before the gates of the 2015 Ploughing Championships opened to the public on Tuesday morning.
However, as light broke yesterday, it was clear the rain had eased and a blue sky was emerging for the day ahead.
From early morning, the site was awash with activity as exhibitors arrived to prepare for a busy day ahead.
Things were just in place when the crowds began to arrive in earnest for the opening day of this year’s Ploughing in Rathineska – the last to be held in the popular Laois venue before the event moves on next year.
At noon, President Michael D Higgins officially opened this year’s National Ploughing Championships, describing it as one of the highlights of the year and a celebration of rural Ireland, Irish farming and those who farm.
By the early afternoon, the site was thronged as the eager crowds enjoyed the warmth of the September sun.
Those in attendance were treated to a new Guinness world record, when the teams at Lidl and Fallon’s Tea poured the most cups of tea in one hour – pouring more than 1,600 in total.
But what the Ploughing really offers is a fantastic snapshot of the creativity and forward thinking that currently prevails in Irish agriculture.
Despite a difficult year for many farming sectors, the mood this year in Ratheniska remains very positive for the greatest annual gathering for the industry.
At this time of year, when the national spotlight falls on farming, it always seems to shine – no matter the weather.
