The slurry spreading and fertiliser seasons opened yesterday (Wednesday) in Zone A counties. However, even in these drier areas – Dublin, Wicklow, Wexford, Kilkenny, Carlow, Cork, Tipperary, Waterford, Laois, Offaly and Kildare – most fields remain saturated.

In Zone B (counties Longford, Westmeath, Meath, Louth, Roscommon, Mayo, Galway, Limerick, Clare, Kerry and Sligo) spreading can start Saturday 16 January, again once ground soaks.

In remaining counties, and in Northern Ireland, spreading can start on 1 February. Most areas will have a dry but cold week.
