The country’s main retailers are selling Brussels sprouts for 49c/500g or €1/kg.
A survey of the country’s main retail outlets on Christmas week found that Tesco, SuperValu, Dunnes Stores, Lidl and Aldi were all selling sprouts for 49c for a 500g bag.
The Irish Farmers Journal survey also found that carrots were being sold in these outlets for between 49c/kg and €1.59/kg.

IFA vegetables committee chair Matt Foley said 49c/500g means that growers are still not making money.
“The only good thing I can say about it is that at least we’re not at 2013 levels where fresh produce was being sold for 5c and 6c,” Foley said. “Nobody makes money with 49c veg but at least we’re not being embarrassed by seeing our produce in the shops for 5c. That’s the only saving grace but nobody can make a living at that price.”
Foley added that sales overall “have been good”.
