The next few weeks will be busy for Leaving Certificate students. For many mocks and CAO applications may be complete, but project deadlines loom and study is being cranked up.

On top of this, numerous open days and education days are on the horizon around the country for students who are not 100% sure where to go/what to do in September, or beyond.

The nationwide red warning, however, meant open days last week were cancelled as the effects of Storm Emma took hold. Among these were the Teagasc open days. These were supposed to begin on 1 March with the Salesian College, in Pallaskenry, Kildalton, on 2 March and Mountbellow yesterday. However, due to Storm Emma, Salesian College in Pallaskerny and Kildalton were both postponed. The Kildalton will now take place on 16 March, while the Pallaskenry will take place on 13 March. The other Teagasc open days will take place in the coming weeks.

Botanic gardens

Botanic Gardens College of Horticulture’s open day takes place today. Building on the success of last year’s event, where 200 people attended, as well as the 70 attendees in October, principal John Mulhern hopes for more of the same on this occasion.

Mulhern told Irish Country Living that it is a multidimensional open day, with industry speakers conducting talks, as well as interaction with college staff. According to Mulhern, there is a huge demand for qualified horticulturists in the industry at the moment.

“Currently there is huge demand in the industry for suitably qualified people to gain employment and develop valuable and rewarding careers in horticulture. This summer we will continue our short courses to students by offering fruit and veg production.

“Garden design and landscape construction and maintenance courses will take place across June and July. Anyone interested can contact the college office directly to complete their application process.”

Today’s open day will take place in the new education centre.

Ballyhaise

Also taking place today is the Ballyhaise Agricultural College open day. Up to 200 people also came to its first open day back in September and more of the same is expected today.

Clonakilty

Clonakilty recently appointed Keith Kennedy as its new principal. Kennedy replaced the distinguished Majella Moloney and his first open day as principal will take place Thursday 9 March at the college.

Gurteen

On 14 March, Gurteen will open its doors to students from around the country.

College head Mike Pearson told Irish Country Living that the college offers students a versatile and comprehensive education that is focused on practicality.

Pallaskerny and Kildalton

As mentioned, Pallaskenry will hold its open day on 13 March and Kildalton will host its on 16 March, after Storm Emma forced them to cancel after last week’s red weather warning.

Louth Meath ETB

Outside of agricultural colleges, the further education and training open days in the Louth/Meath area have been running over the last number of days and will hold a final open day today at the Adult Education Centre. These open days took place in numerous places around the Louth/Meath area.

Over the course of the week, attendees met the teaching staff and adult guidance teams, among others. The events also give more information on further education courses such as traineeships and apprenticeships. Representatives from the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection were also in attendance.

Running since Monday, the final open day will take place today at the Adult Education Centre on Chapel Street in Dundalk, 10am-12.30pm. For more information on courses provided, visit the website www.lmetb.ie.

In other notices, some key dates should be noted for the CAO. The change of course choices facility closed on 1 March at 5.15pm and the CAO late application facility is opened on 5 March at noon, for a fee of €60 for online applications. CL
