The cattle sale on Thursday 5 November in Raphoe mart was also a success, with 500 cattle on offer on the day.

“Bullock trade was very good; bull trade was not so brisk. There were 500 cattle on offer in Raphoe, with a large number of heifers. All heifers on offer yesterday were sold,” said mart manager Ann Harkin.

Strong bulls over 600kg were selling for between €655 and €725 over their weight, while beef bullocks over 600kg were going for between €595 and €1000 over their weight.

Store bullocks 400-600kg were selling for €400-€910, while beef heifers over 500kg were going for €465-€855 with their weight.

Store heifers over 500kg were a bit quieter at €350 and €675 with the weight, while dry cows found buyers at €650-€1480.

Health Checks

There was great interest outside of the ring for the free health checks provided by the Irish Farmers Journal, Full Health Medical and ICOS, who are working with Movember Ireland to help raise awareness of men’s health issues, especially amongst farmers, throughout the month of November.

54 men availed of the free health checks carried out by Full Health Medical, which included a full heart check (blood pressure, BMI and cholesterol), a diabetes screen, mental health advice, prostate cancer awareness, and nutrition, lifestyle and exercise advice.

A bucket was passed around the ring at Raphoe on Thursday, and €360 was collected for the Movember Foundation. This will go towards funding innovative programmes for men’s health, such as prostate and testicular cancer, and mental health.

The next free health check will take place on 10 November in Corrin Mart in Co Cork, followed by Castleisland Mart in Co Kerry on 11 November. All are welcome.
