Ciara Hennebry, a second year business student in Waterford Institute of Technology, will be spending four weeks in June with the organisation Projects Abroad in a rural village outside the town of Arusha in Tanzania where she will take part in the teaching program.

To raise funds for the trip, which costs €5,000, she is raffling a limousin bull calf and holding a table quiz in Waterford in March.

Ciara, who hopes to lecture in the future, will split her program into two weeks of teaching and two weeks of a Micro Finance program. "During the teaching program I will be teaching English in a primary School, where I will be working independently among other Projects Abroad volunteers and expected to plan and prepare for lessons each day," she said.

"By providing Conversational English teaching, I will greatly enhance the learning experience and the future prospects of the children I teach. The students will range from the age of five to 16 whilst the class size will be 40 to 50 children."

Projects Abroad are targeting specific groups in need of help in Tanzania and provide funding and training to give them the skills and financial help needed to start a business. Ciara is hoping to use her experience to help Tanzanians develop their agricultural enterprises. She said: "I have previously run my own business and now help others set up their businesses whilst providing teaching, mentoring and advice to students in my past secondary school about running their own business and entering competitions such as the student enterprise awards."

The raffle and table quiz will take place in Maudie's Pub, Rathgormack, Co Waterford on 6 March at 8pm. Partipants will also have the chance to win €100 and other prizes on the night.
