Though Tesco remains Ireland’s largest supermarket with a market share of 25%, sales are down by 3.7% on last year.

Attracting an extra 50,000 customers this year, SuperValu now boasts a market share of 24.9% and threatens to overtake Tesco as Ireland's top supermarket. Almost three quarters of all Irish households surveyed by Kantar shopped in SuperValu.

The discount retailers, Lidl and Aldi, both saw sales increase by 10.7%. They have a market share of 7.6% and 8.1% respectively.

Sales at Dunnes also increased by 6.5%, with market share rising just over one percentage point to 23.4%. This improvement has been attributed to the supermarket’s recent ‘Shop & Save’ campaign.
