With the Dutch government currently attempting to reduce dairy numbers in order to meet its phosphorus reduction targets, it was expected that milk production in the state would see a sharper decrease.

However, production has remained steady, with month-on-month collection remaining relatively consistent since late last year.

June milk production does, however, show the lowest collection since November 2016 and is down 61,000t on May figures.

In November, a scheme was agreed by the Dutch government to decrease the dairy herd by 11% or 175,000 head in 2017. This was to bring the Dutch phosphate production in line with EU regulation.

Last February, an acceleration to the cull took 30,000 cows out of the national herd, with all applications for the scheme accepted by Dutch agriculture minister Martijn van Dam. The scheme offered €300/cow slaughter premium.

Despite this, Dutch collections in June exceeded the three-year average for the month by 5.67% and the five-year average for the month by 10.74%.
