Takeuchi has a long history of producing quality mini-diggers. The company was formed in Japan in 1963 and is still run by its founder. In 1971, it became the first company to produce a miniature excavator and people said it would never work. Now, more than 30 year later, it produces 20,000 machines a year. The TB2150 is a step into the world of larger machines. Weighing in at 15,680kg when fitted with a 2ft bucket and full of fuel, the machine puts the biggest Takeuchi in the 15t class. For this weight of digger, it comes in a surprisingly compact package with a track footprint of just 2,690mm x 3,580mm.

The TB2150 has some features carried over from its smaller relatives – the main one being its unique offset boom. This allows the machine to work in areas where other 15t machines would struggle. The reach at ground level to 8,320mm and digging depth to 5,225mm provides excellent operating parameters. A 550mm blade is also standard on all TB2150s.

It comes complete with the latest Tier IV Deutz turbocharged engine for more power and greater torque, along with a well-proven, high-performance hydraulic system with improved power, cycle times and efficiency. The four-cylinder, 3.6-litre engine gives out 114hp (85kw). The impressive hydraulic power comes from the variable displacement pump, which produces a respectable 224 litres per minute at a maximum of 340-bar pressure.

At the digging end, this gives the TB2150 an impressive 98.7kN bucket breakout force, making it a match for many bigger machines.

With an overall compact design and rounded corners, the TB2150 minimises potential machine damage. Hydraulic hoses are positioned to prevent damage from attachments. Front-mounted LED work lights and a reversing camera with in-cab display improve job site safety.

Spring-applied brakes on travel and slew motors are hydraulically released for a safe, reliable brake performance.

Boom and arm holding valves with audible warnings come as standard on the TB2150 These are a good safety feature as they help to maintain load control in the event of a hose failure.

The TB2150 offers excellent lifting capability. Dual-boom cylinders provide added lifting power and additional clearance for bucket and attachments. These cylinders are also fitted with check valves, which in the case of hose failure will remove any danger of the load dropping in an uncontrolled manner.

The cab on the big Takeuchi is full of all the high-spec equipment you would expect from this manufacturer, with reversing camera as standard and a side camera as an optional extra. There is also a heated air suspension seat and an automatic climate control as standard. If the quality of the TB2150’s smaller siblings is carried over into this bigger machine, then it could be the one to watch in this size category
