Despite the horrendously long, wet winter, we look forward with anticipation to a warm, settled summer to lift the spirits of everyone. Looking back, the weather this year so far has all the hallmarks of 2013 (but without a fodder crisis), which slowly blossomed into what was probably the best summer of the past eight years. If 2016 follows suit, we should be in for a fabulous summer.

The onset of summer brings the excitement of the show circuit for hundreds of exhibitors across the country. Whether it’s a baking class, a colouring competition or an All-Ireland calf championship, the summer shows cater for all interests. They also generate a financial boost for the local economy.

Unfortunately, the running of these events is completely dependent on voluntary assistance. Without it, there is no show and this is clearly evident with the cancellation of the Enniscorthy, Oughterard and Roundfort shows in 2016. It appears to be getting extremely difficult to attract young blood onto committee organisations. They will offer their help unconditionally on the show day, but won’t commit to sitting on a committee and take up roles such as treasurer, secretary or chair. Work, career and family are cited as the main reasons.

Site

Apart from personnel, the show site can be problematic, particularly if the site is privately owned. A number of show societies have acquired their own site, which allows them a lot more flexibility and scope to erect permanent sheds, roadways and facilities.

Sponsorship is another major obstacle. The greatest way to drive classes and lure competitors is by having an attractive prize fund. Show societies are at the mercy of businesses, banks, companies, etc, to get sponsorship each year. The gathering of the prize fund is a mammoth task in itself. There are over 130 shows in the country and the same pot of money is targeted year after year.

Show schedule

New to the ISA shows schedule (page 8) this year is the South Kerry Ploughing Championship and Harvest Show scheduled on 11 September; the Kerry Bog Pony National show on 20 August; the Clarecastle Show scheduled for 7 August and Tatters July Show on 28 and 29 June. We wish organisers, exhibitors and visitors a wonderful show season.
