Larry J Goodman may have been at Sunday’s Tullamore Show but the original beef baron was not the biggest farmer in Blueball.

Despite his sizeable feedlot, Goodman was eclipsed by a couple of bigger operators at the national livestock show, which was attended by some 60,000 people.

Bord Bia hosted a group of Russian and Kazakhstani farmers who were over looking at how they could ship some of our genetics over to their countries. The Dealer bumped into one Kazakhstani farmer, Baurzan Kasenov, who runs a massive 250,000ha (617,000ac) farm with over 2,000 purebred Angus cattle. He is over looking to see if our genetics people can fill a few orders.

The visit was funded by the Ireland-Russia Joint Economic Commission (JEC) following a successful bid for funding by the Bord Bia office in Moscow.

The Dealer also ran into Allan Martin, who runs a 283,000ha (700,000ac) beef farm in Australia. Whilst visiting the Co Galway in-laws, Allan stopped by the Tullamore Show to see how we do it. He said that his local processor is some 3,000km away from the home farm and his annual transport costs are as high as AUS$30,000 (€20,599) every year.

I wonder how many weanlings I could run on 700,000ac?
