Co Westmeath farmer Jim Griffith is appealing for information after three heifers, two Angus crosses and a Hereford cross, were stolen from a field last week.

The heifers were taken between Wednesday and Saturday last and were with 56 other heifers when they were taken. The three heifers are all aged about one and a half.

Speaking to the Irish Farmers Journal, Jim said that the cattle were taken from rented land, about 40 minutes from his home in Drumrarney in the county.

“They were there Wednesday morning and when I went back on Saturday I noticed one was missing. So I went and checked them all then and found three were missing.

“I walked the land around the area for two days solid to see if they were around.”

Jim said tracks from a jeep and trailer can be seen beside the field – “they came, parked the trailer along a wall and took them”.

A neighbour who heard a jeep near the field at the time of the theft told Jim that he believed it was a Roscommon registered Toyota Land Cruiser that was involved in the theft.

The land they were taken from is on the main Mullingar- Athlone road and Jim said the heifers are worth in the region of €900 each.

The gardaí are also looking into the theft.
