Congratulations to PJ Ryan from Newport, Tipperary, who won the Irish Farmers Journal ‘Selfie on the Farm’ competition.
The term ‘selfie’ (self-taken portrait) was named Oxford Dictionary’s Word of the Year for 2013.
To mark this, the Irish Farmers Journal set a challenge for our Facebook fans to send us in their funniest ‘Selfie on the Farm’ photos.

A panel of judges selected the 10 best photos and asked people to vote for the best by liking it. The runaway winner was PJ’s photo which he took earlier this month when he was helping his daughter with an agricultural science project by taking photos of his Salers eating hay.
Over the moon
Before he left the field, he took one of himself not thinking it was going to end up in the Irish Farmers Journal.
However, the picture was spotted by his daughter Aisling who sent it into us, saying: “Dad buys and reads the Irish Farmers Journal religiously every week and it would be amazing if you could publish dad’s picture. I know he would be over the moon to see himself in the Journal.”
PJ’s photo has now gone viral featuring on, amongst others, the BBC and Huffington Post’s websites. You can see all photos which made the final of the selfie competition by visiting the Official Farmers Journal Facebook page.
