The Garda Stolen Vehicle Unit reports that tractor theft is down overall, with 49 tractors reported stolen in 2015, 36 of which were recovered.

Farmers, contractors and people using plant and agricultural machinery have become more vigilant and careful in securing their equipment and carrying out basic checks before purchasing from private or unknown sources.

Detective Garda Eugene O’Sullivan of the Garda Stolen Vehicle Unit told the Irish Farmers Journal that the theft of newer tractors and machinery has fallen dramatically with the introduction of the Cesar Security markings coming installed on most new tractors, plant and farm machinery supplied by the main manufacturers such as John Deere, Massey Ferguson, New Holland and JCB, etc.

He said that thieves have reverted to stealing older models, which carry the same risk but with a less lucrative return.
