The hardest thing for new driver especially is the hunger. This is something people cannot understand until they experience it firsthand. Hours and hours of starvation in the cab to finally be greeted with a slice of ham and half a tomato will make grown men cry. I have seen people lose three stone over the course of the season without even trying. No need for Weight Watchers - just draw silage for a season.

The best advice is to bring lunch with you. Often you may not even stop for dinner so keep snacking throughout the day in order to keep your energy up.

Stay hydrated is vitally important. Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day - a minimum of two litres of water is advised. Buy a cheap cool box to store your food and water in to keep it fresh and cool.

If you are lucky enough to stop for dinner, make sure you eat enough food to feed a small army as you will never know when you will get your next meal.
