The mart trade for good quality continental stores continues to hold fairly strongly throughout the country.

However, in recent days, mart managers have said that the trade for plainer types of stores and weanlings continues to be quite difficult.

In Carnew, mart manager David Quinn said, that like many other areas of the country, there was a good trade for store bullocks again on Saturday. Although he added that the plainer Angus and Hereford types were being met with a more difficult trade.

He said that those Angus types under 350kg were a solid trade but from there to 400kg received prices of €1.90 to €2/kg for the majority. More forward Angus store bullocks were a fairly firm trade. There were more feeders active again today which helped the trade. But again forward stores were met with the best prices.

Buyers at Balla

At Balla mart in Co Mayo there was an increased entry of continental stores, and more buyers were active also. There were a few extra buyers from Donegal and other areas which helped increase the demand for forward store bullocks on the day.

Forward bullocks over 600kg were an improved trade and sold mainly from €2.10/kg to €2.30/kg for R grades, with better quality U grades making over €2.40/kg or over €1500/head for the best heavy bullocks. Farmers and feeders were active for stores from 500kg to 600kg.

Age and quality were two of the main issues affecting prices. Average quality R grades sold mainly from €2.20/kg to €2.30/kg with better quality U grade types making from €2.50/kg to €2.60/kg or €1,250 to €1,500 for top quality U grades.

The heifer trade was more firm than last week. Heifers over 550kg sold mainly from €1,150 to €1,250 per head. Better quality forward heifers sold to €2.40/kg to €2.50/kg. Lighter store heifers were met with firm demand; again many farmers were active for feeding heifers and those that can be turned back to grass for cheap weight gain before housing. Those from 400kg to 500kg sold mainly from €950 to €1200/head.

Weanlings

The number of weanlings on offer on the day was low, as next Tuesday sees the return of the special weanling sales at the mart. Cull cows remained a steady trade for fleshed types with prices of €1.80/kg to €1.85/kg common. Plainer feeding cows continue to be a slightly slower sell.

€1,700 average for in-calf heifers

Tuam mart

Tuam mart saw a special entry of in-calf heifers today. There were 52 in total and were met with fairly strong demand, although buyer activity weaned towards the end. Of the 52m 30 were sold and made mainly from €1.600 to €1,800.

The heifers on offer were mainly Limousin, with some Charolais and Belgian Blues. There were some calved but the majority were due to easy calving AI sires. The heifers were of very good quality and were calving down at between two and a half and three years old.
