This will be Treanor’s fourth and final term as Monaghan chair. The Monaghan man was first elected to the position in 2013.

All the county officers in the Monaghan executive were re-elected, except for one position – that of the county’s public relations officer.

Treanor told the Irish Farmers Journal that he was happy to be returned to the role of Monaghan chair for his final term, adding that he is "looking forward to continuing to represent the interests of Monaghan farmers".

He is also hoping for a slightly quieter year in 2016 than he had in 2015.

“A lot of good things happened last year and a lot of bad,” he said. “The removal of dairy quotas, an end to brucellosis testing – they were all good things. But the organisation also went through a lot of turmoil. It will take time for it to rebuild the trust it formerly had from its members, but there are clear signs it is getting back on to the road it is supposed to be on, which is representing Irish farmers’ interests.”

Good turnout

There was a good turnout at the county’s AGM, which took place in the Glencarn Hotel in Castleblayney, Co Monaghan.

Upwards of 100 people arrived at the meeting, which heard updates from all the county commodity chairs.

Dairy commodity chair James O’Connor spoke at length about the difficult situation for dairy markets, but added a note of optimism at the end by highlighting China’s 51% increase in dairy imports in January 2016 compared to January 2015.

“The commodity chairs, while being realistic, were trying to show some light at the end of the tunnel for farmers there on the night,” Treanor said. “They were trying to highlight the positive in what is clearly a very difficult time for farm incomes across the sectors.”

Support for IFA deputy presidential candidate

Monaghan’s IFA deputy presidential candidate, Nigel Renaghan, could not be present at the AGM as he was busy with hustings in Co Mayo, but Treanor said there was a clear feeling from the floor that the whole county is supporting Renaghan’s candidacy.

“There was definitely a feeling of commitment from those present on the night that Nigel was fully backed by his county and we would be rooting for him in the IFA deputy presidential election.”
