Champion Belgian Blue
The prize for the overall female champion went to Richard and Fidelma Stanley, Bandon, Co Cork, with Ballinakill Holly, a September 2013-born heifer, sired by Harisson out of Ballinakill Beauty. In reserve was Rosemount Hal2 Et for Trevor Ashmore, Co Wexford. Hal, also the overall male champion, was sired by Empire D’ochain out of the homebred cow Rosemount Evelyn.
Beef Shorthorn
It was a clean sweep for Tommy Staunton of Kinvara, Co Galway. Supreme champion went to his prolific homebred show heifer Caramba Rothes Hottie, who has also collected honours at Balmoral this year, as well as picking up a champion title at Limerick Show as a calf. Reserve went to Tommy’s two-year-old heifer Graigue Hilltop, an Uppermill Champ daughter out of Graigue Hilltop 3rd.
Simmental
In the Simmental ring at the 22nd National Simmental Show, the females came out tops. The Neenan brothers of Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo, won national junior cow champion, female champion and eventually supreme national Simmental champion with the homebred Fearna Destiny. She will go forward in the new year to collect the RDS champion of champions award for the Simmental breed.
Reserve overall national champion went to the well-known McGarry family, of Caldra, Co Longford, with their national junior champion heifer Clonguish Elegant. Elegant also picked up interbreed champion at Arva Show this summer, as well as the Celtic Sires national senior heifer calf champion in 2014.
In the young handlers competitions, James Kelly, Co Clare, picked up the FBD Insurance junior handler title, while fellow Clare native Ronan Tuohy collected the FBD Insurance senior handler title, having won the junior section last year.
In the dairy section, champion Jersey went to Eamonn McLoughney, Nenagh, Co Tipperary, with Bluestone JJ Louise, a February 2011 cow sired by Giprat Belles Chairman out of Bluestone Jans Ariel Louise. Reserve went to Co Cork native Patrick Ahern with Clydeyalley Pride Twinkle, a February 2013-born cow.
Junior Holstein Friesian dairy champion went to Liam Murphy, Co Carlow, with Evergreen Seven Lauren, born September 2013. In reserve was the 11-month-old Cahirmee Aftershock Marieka for Pat Smith of Doneraile, Co Cork.
