The protracted election of the IFA's Connacht regional chair may be coming to an end.

IFA national returning officer Jer Bergin announced this Monday that former Sligo county chair Eddie Davitt and former Mayo county chair Padraic Joyce have been nominated to run for the position.

This was the outcome of the nomination process agreed at the IFA AGM earlier this month, whereby the five candidates put forward by their own county executives were entered in a secret ballot by the five Connacht county chairs.

The measure was introduced to widen the pool of potential endorsements as no candidate had received the two nominations required to run.

The IFA said the count of the ballots was conducted by its legal adviser James Staines and the result reported to the national returning officer.

Mid-June election

Voting in the election of the new Connacht chair will take place at five county executive meetings to be held in the Connacht counties over two weeks in mid-June.

At the IFA AGM, it was decided in principle that, for this election only, the usual weighted vote from the recent presidential election will not apply. Instead, members of the five county executives will have a vote.

The IFA has said that its executive council will meet in June in advance of the county executive meetings to introduce this provision.
