Philip and Linda Jones made it two years in a row when they claimed the overall supreme championship at the Emerald Expo over the weekend.

Last year, the couple secured the championship with Hallow Advent Twizzle 3, who later went on to claim the Baileys champion cow at the same Virginia showgrounds in August.

This year, Hallow Attic Christina claimed the title and the Jones family will be looking to August hoping for a similar result as 2016.

A four-year-old cow by Allyndale-I Attic, Christina is out of Mr Minister-bred dam Coolroehouse Minst Christina. Having given over 11,000kg in her first lactation of 4.68% fat and 3.26% protein, she again calved in October with a calving interval of 372 days.

Emerald Expo done and dusted for 2017

Continued from P56

This is the second time Virgina showgrounds has played host to the competition, which this year celebrates its seventh consecutive year.

Taking up the helm as judge this year was Mark Logan, farm manager at the renowned Clandeboye estate in Northern Ireland. Mark is a judge of high repute and has a wealth of experience over the years as both exhibitor and judge.

Having tapped Hallow Attic Christina forward as his overall champion, Mark was quick to approach Clonpaddin M Cyg Fame Et to award the reserve championship.

Exhibited by James Mulhall, this VG87 classified second-calver is sired by Mr Chasity Gold Chip Et. Fame comes from three generations of EX-classified dams and gave over 9,000kg in her first lactation.

Claiming the title of honourable mention was third-calver Ardnasalem Jenny Et from Patrick and Karl Coulton.

Sired by Pine Tree Sid and back on a dam by the well-known Picston Shuttle, Jenny gave a massive 12,773kg in her first lactation. Calved in December, the five-year-old is already classified as EX92.
