A rainfall warning was issued on Thursday morning for counties Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Clare and Kerry.

Between 30 to 40mm of rain is expected to fall and possibly more on hills and mountains.

Some very heavy downpours are expected throughout the rest of today, tonight and tomorrow.

Very unsettled weather

Separately, Met Éireann has put in place another warning for cold and very unsettled weather right over the weekend.

Periods of heavy rain are expected, with some severe downpours at times, especially in southwestern, western and northwestern counties.

There may also be spot flooding in these areas, with some falls of sleet and snow at times also.

Both yellow weather warnings will remain in place until 6pm on Friday.

Meanwhile, for the rest of Thursday there will be heavy rain through west Munster and Connacht with some very heavy downpours in places and local spot flooding.

Elsewhere will be drier and scattered outbreaks of rain will develop, turning heavy in Ulster in the evening, with some falls of sleet and snow there also.

Highest temperatures of 6°C to 9°C in freshening southerly winds, but temperatures falling sharply this evening in northern areas.
