Speaking with the Irish Farmers Journal, Co Kerry-based pig farmer Shane McAuliffe said that he visited a local butcher shop, Matt The Butcher, in Tralee on Saturday and asked where their meat was sourced.

“He told me the meat came from (a supplier) and I knew that it wasn’t Bord Bia approved,” McAuliffe said. The Truly Irish farmer proceeded to ask about the country of origin, he said he was told that the back bacon was Dutch despite being labelled as Irish.

“He took the sign away as soon as I had pointed it out to him,” McAuliffe said.

When contacted by the Irish Farmers Journal a spokesperson for ‘Matt The Butcher’ confirmed that the bacon in question had been mislabelled.

He said that the shop sells both Irish and Dutch bacon and that “the lad just caught me unaware.”
