The nightmare scenario started on Monday, when 67-year-old Don Fagg had to carry out a repair on his machine while working alone in a field, Australian media report.
He was crushed and trapped by a piece of the equipment and neighbours only found him and raised the alarm late on Tuesday night.
Rescuers told local media that they had to work for three hours to cut the baler open and rescue the farmer, who was taken to hospital in a critical condition. He was reported to have died the next day.
The accident highlights the need for farmers to inform family members or colleagues of their whereabouts when working alone in isolated areas.
