I farm: “Eighty acres at a height of about 800ft, so we’re very high up with heavy land. This can lead to management issues. There are three of us involved in the farm – myself, my father George senior and my cousin Alan Humphries.”

Pedigree: “There are 40 pedigree Saler suckler cows on the farm. They are crossed to either a Saler stock bull that we brought in from France or a Culard Charolais stock bull, which produce some super calves. We breed Salers mainly due to their ease of calving and their good mothering ability.”

Progeny: “We finish the bulls at about 15 months of age and the heifers are sold for breeding at around a year old. It’s usually repeat customers who come back again for the heifers because they see how good the stock is.”

Showing: “I am still recovering from the Balmoral Show last week. We had a team of eight cattle at the show and it really is a team effort for it but the work started months ago. Once Christmas comes, you’re working to get the stock trained and ready. We will go to about six or seven other shows throughout the summer, with Balmoral kicking off the season. There is a bit of an addiction to showing. It gets you out meeting farmers and the ‘craic’ is great.”

Watch an interview with George's cousin Alan, who was showing with him at Balmoral, in our video below:

Collaborative effort: “There are a lot of young farmers involved in showing, more than older farmers now. The three of us work as a team for the showing but everyone has their own input. There are a lot more senior farmers passing down the farm now to young farmers around me, whereas a few years ago they would keep farming and never retire.’’

Quotable quote: “We brought the stock bull from France in February and there was great interest in him at Balmoral. You have to try and do something different to stay ahead. We don’t really go the traditional route.”
