O’Driscoll said the Department would be hard-nosed in these negotiations and was prioritising continued, unfettered access to the UK market for Irish food exporters.

Market access is going to become more important than ever for the Irish agri-food industry. He said Ireland has succeeded in opening new markets for Irish beef in Canada, the Maldives, Iran and New Zealand in 2016 and that Egypt, Vietnam and South Korea were currently being worked on.

O’Driscoll said Brexit would be one of the biggest challenges faced by the industry in the coming years.
