Weekly podcast: RVL protest, Glanbia Ireland and Australian feral donkeys
In this week's podcast, we hear from the farmers protesting against proposed RVl closures, planning Glanbia's next joint venture and cavling 1,000 suckler heifers in Co Antrim.

In a rare show of unity, the IFA, Macra na Feirme, the ICMSA, ICSA and INHFA staged a joint protest at the regional veterinary lab in Sligo this Wednesday. The farming organisations are worried that the proposed closure of three to five of the six RVLs will compromise animal health. Amy Fitzgibbon spoke with some of the protesters.
Last Friday, livestock specialist Darren Carty joined European Agriculture Commissioner Phil Hogan on a visit to Mountbellew college. He asked him about the next moves on CAP, including the definition of active farmers.
Beef editor Adam Woods attended the recent open day at the Jalex herd in Toomebridge, Co Antrim. There are nearly 1,000 in-calf heifers on the farm, as well as a strong machinery business. Adam asked James Alexander how he manages it all.
On a visit to Ireland, Australian farmer Simon Mattsson told Tommy Moyles about his experience working on a cattle farm the size of a medium Irish county and moving into sugar cane.
Property editor Shirley Busteed features two attractive sales in this week’s Irish Country Living. The properties on offers are very much farmers' farms, she told consumer editor Ciara Leahy.
