The Moynihan Brothers from Ferns, purveyors of a long musical tradition stretching back over many decades, will feature in the new film, Brooklyn, currently being shot around Wexford, Dublin and Canada.

Based on the award-winning novel by Wexford author Colm Tóibín who hails from Enniscorthy, the film features Saoirse Ronan, Domhnaill Gleeson, the highly acclaimed Julie Walters and Jim Broadbent.

Brooklyn is set in the 1950s and centres around Wexford girl Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan) who leaves Enniscorthy for the shores of Amerikay in search of a better life in Brooklyn. The place has always had strong resonances with Ireland and Italy.

Elliot Willensky beautifully captures the essence of the region over the decades in his wonderful book, When Brooklyn Was The World.

While casting around for a suitable band to play during the wedding scene in the movie, members of the research team came across The Moynihan Brothers on YouTube.

“We were absolutely delighted when the call came through for us to feature in Brooklyn. We recorded our piece in the old dance hall in Enniscorthy last week.

“The film’s wedding guests were dancing away to our music, which was in keeping with the sounds of the 1950s.

“Our father Dave (Snr) played the same hall back in 1953 and it was an amazing feeling to make that connection all over again. Little did he think that his sons would feature in a movie in the same hall six decades later. The film is due for release in June 2015,” says Dave.

Today, The Moynihan Brothers feature Dave, Arthur and Tommy. They play many dates around the country and overseas.

Next week sees them off to Spain for the annual Enjoy Travel April in Andalucía, a 10-day event in Torremolinos.
