Which TDs have land (and shares)?
There are the usual suspects like Andrew Doyle, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, who has farmland at Trooperstown, Roundwood, Co Wicklow; and Bobby Aylward, farmer and Fianna Fáil junior spokesman on farming and skills, who has land in Mullinavat, Co Kilkenny, and also has shares in Glanbia PLC in Kilkenny.
Here are a few of the rest:
This Fianna Fáil TD for Louth is a retired primary school principal and has 90 acres of farmland in Knockbridge, Dundalk, Co Louth. He is currently applying for planning permission for another three acres at the same location.
No real surprises here. Cahill is a dairy farmer and former president of the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association. He sits on the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and is Fianna Fáil junior spokesperson for Food and Horticulture. As well as having farmland in Killinan, Thurles, Ballinahow, Thurles and Ballycahill, Thurles, Cahill has shares in Glanbia Plc in Kilkenny, Centenary Thurles co-op, Co Tipperary, and is a director in Thurles Fresh milk and Centenary Thurles co-op in Tipperary.
Independent Cork southwest TD Michael Collins, who was elected to the Dáil for the first time in the 2016, is a farmer, undertaker and casual labourer. He has shares in Drinagh Co-op and in Cork Mart Shares. He also owns 58 acres of farmland in Schull, Co Cork, and leases 22 acres in Crookhaven, Co Cork.
Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed does not declare any farmland on the register, but he declares that he did have shares in Kerry Group which were disposed of on 23 August 2016, not long after he was appointed as Minister for Agriculture in the 32nd Dáil.
Danny Healy Rae
Healy Rae, of the famous Kerry politicians’ clan, is an independent Irish TD elected for the first time to the Dáil in February 2016. Healy Rae has 50 acres of farmland at Fussa, Kilgarvan, Co Kerry, five acres at Gortnaboul, Kilgarvan and 38 acres at Gullaba, Kilgarvan. He also has shares in Kerry Group plc, Tralee, Co Kerry.
Michael Healy Rae
Brother of Danny, Michael has 110 acres of land altogether, 10 acres at Gortnaboul, Kilgarvan, Co Kerry, and 100 acres of farmland and forestry at Coolougues, Kilgarvan, Co Kerry. He is also a director in Roughty Plant Hire Ltd, Kilgarvan, Co Kerry.
Heather Humphreys, Fine Gael politician and Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs since 2016, was elected at the 2011 general election as a TD for the Cavan–Monaghan constituency. Humphreys (sister of IFA Ulster/north Leinster chairman Bert Stewart) has 62 acres at Drumake, Newbliss, Co Monaghan.
Fianna Fáil spokesperson on Health, Billy Kelleher is a farmer and TD for Cork North-Central. He has shares in Kerry co-op and Kerry Group plc, Tralee, Co Kerry. He also has 126 acres of a dairy farm at Ballyphilip, White Cross, Co Cork, and 60 acres at Coolgreen, Whites Cross, Co Cork.
Seán O’ Feargháil
Sean, a Fianna Fáil TD, has been Ceann Comhairle of Dáil Éireann since March 2016. He joined the Fianna Fáil Party in 1979 after he had returned to full-time farming. He farms circa 100 acres at Fennor and Shanacloon, Kildare.
Another first timer to the Dáil, Fianna Fáil politician Anne Rabbitte is a TD for the Galway East constituency and spokesperson on children and youth affairs. Rabbitte has farmland on Abbey Road, Abbeyknockmoy, Tuam, Co Galway.
