Last week, the Irish Farmers Journal exclusively revealed that Denis Duggan had been appointed the new chief exectuive officer (CEO) of Macra.

Duggan takes over from Edmond Connolly, who had spent eight years at the helm of the young farmers assocation – but who is Denis Duggan and how did he get here?

Born in Tipperary, Denis holds qualifications in IT, sustainable rural development, business studies and just this year completed an executive MBA at NUIG.

He also holds a variety of achievements, ranging from an Initiative Award from Birr Town Council to a National Young Scientist Award in 1997.

Current roles

For the last three years, Duggan has held the position of senior regional development executive with Enterprise Ireland. His role at the organisation included encouraging and supporting agri-business start-ups and providing guidance to new developing businesses.

He has also been involved in the establishment of the Innovation Arena held annually at the National Ploughing Championships, where innovative agri companies can win funding for their start-up businesses.

Previous work

Prior to taking up his post at Enterprise Ireland, Duggan worked with Shannon Development for six years. His main accomplishment with the Development Board was founding the Birr Coder Dojo programme, which ran computer programming classes to teach programming and coding to local children.

Outside of work, Denis has been a volunteer on the board of members at Tipperary Regional Youth Service, where he held the position of treasurer and took charge of the charity’s finances for six years.
