The latest British Wool Marketing Board (BWMB) sale on 16 August saw prices reduce to £1.26/kg (€1.55/kg), due partly to the first entry of Scottish Blackface wool, which sold well at £1.10/kg to £1.19/kg (€1.28/kg to €1.46/kg), but diluted average prices. These are industry prices and not those returned to farmers (30p/kg to 35p/kg lower).
There was a higher entry of 1.97m kilos of wool compared with 1.71m in the previous sale, which put some pressure on the trade. The sale started slowly, but improved as it went on, with a clearance rate of 85%, compared with 94% in the previous sale, but is reasonably normal for the time of the season.
