The attempt, which will occur during the Mount Melleray Community Silage Weekend, will involve a crew of women recruited from Waterford, Tipperary, Cork and Limerick.

The women will mow, rake and draw 30 acres of silage in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society at Mount Melleray Abbey.

They will use a mixture of modern and older machinery, with each allowed to bring their own tractor and machinery to the event.

The silage cutting will last from 12.30pm until 4pm.

The Mount Melleray Community Silage Weekend is an annual event and in the past has featured a combination of modern and vintage machinery.

All-female mechanics

Also backing up the silage ladies will be a team of lady mechanics.

“The Socket Rockets”, the only ladies team in the country capable of rebuilding a vintage tractor in a matter of minutes, gave a demonstration at the silage event.

The team have the applicability to rebuild a disassembled Ferguson 20 in under 12 minutes.

The feat is achieved by the all-female crew using only manual tools, with no hydraulic tools used.

Event organizer John O’Brien said the event will be a credit to the women who took part and a testimony to the impact women have in agriculture.

“In agriculture, the impact women have can be overlooked sometimes. At this event they are getting the recognition and due credit they deserve,” he said.

Other activities

There is expected to be a plethora of activity at the show on Saturday, including a consignment of vintage trucks, bikes, machinery and equipment, and a barn dance, all on show at the event.
