Donal Moloney, Roo West, Ardnacrusha, Co Clare, emerged victorious from a very strong showing of Limousin cattle at the South East Clare Show taking both the overall breed champion and the reserve spot with Ardnacrusha Jaguar and Ardnacrusha Jasmine, respectively. Both of these animals have won an extensive collection of prizes already this year for the Moloney family. The champion, Ardnacrusha Jaguar, was the overall Limousin breed champion at the RUAS Spring Show at Balmoral earlier in the season and is sired by Wilodge Vantastic.

Herefords

There was also a strong entry of Herefords on the day with 14-year-old Ciara McNamara from Moyfadda, Labasheeda, Ennis, Co Clare, taking the overall championship with her senior cow Corlismorepoll 1 Sydney 607. This cow was a first prizewinner at both Cork and Charleville shows last month and was purchased for a top price of €7,000 at the Gurteragh Hereford dispersal sale in June 2015.

Trevor Dudley, Dovea, Thurles, Co Tipperary, took the reserve championship with his stock bull Glaslough Judge. This bull was born in March 2010 and has collected a run of four consecutive first prize wins so far this summer.

Charolais championship

Jerry and Kathleen O’Keeffe, Knocklong, Co Limerick, won the Charolais championship with their young heifer calf Grangewood Lula. This calf was born in November 2015 and is sired by the AI bull Panama. The O’Keeffe family also took the reserve championship spot with an older homebred senior heifer.

Commercial section

The youngest animal in the entire Simmental section went on to be crowned the overall breed champion. Coose Heather, born in February 2016 and exhibited by Ronan Tuohy, Whitegate, Co Galway beat out stiff competition from many older calves to win her first big championship title of the season under judge Sarah McElligott from Sixmilebridge, Co Clare.

In the commercial section, there was a strong entry across all classes with Frank Burke, Croom, Co Limerick, claiming the overall supreme commercial champion of the show with a two-and-a-half-year-old Charolais X heifer.
