The Midland and Western Livestock Improvement Society held its second sale of the year on Saturday in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim. The sale catered for Angus and Hereford breeds.

Similar to the previous week’s continental sale, numbers were back on those seen in previous years.

Topping trade after much talk about him pre-sale was Liss Bartle R560 from John McEnroe, Oldcastle, Co Meath.

This September 2015-born HF Rebel son was awarded the reserve Aberdeen Angus championship sash in the pre-sale show before selling for €4,800 to a Northern Ireland breeder.

Bartle carried five stars on both the replacement and terminal index combined with a calving figure of 2.8%.

Claiming the overall championship under John Applebee and selling for the second top price of €3,700 was Jackie Mike.

Bred and exhibited by John Heneghan, Ballinlough, Co Roscommon, Mike is a son of old favourite in the west Nakkeg Nord.

The overall Angus champion Jackie Mike sold for €3,700.

There was a small entry of Herefords and the top price of €2,650 for paid for the breed champion Mount Shannon Johnny.

This Gageboro Morgan son was brought out by Nigel Cox, Carrick-on-Shannon, and carried four stars on both the replacement and terminal indices.

Hereford champion Mount Shannon Johnny sold for €2,650.

The 59 bulls forward on the day met an average of €2,450 with a 62% clearance.
