In January, the Department of Agriculture was "still trying to tease out the technical details" of the CETA trade agreement. This week, however, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency updated its list of establishments eligible to export meat to Canada with 27 Irish beef processors.

Ireland will be one of the first EU countries to export beef to Canada as part of the CETA trade agreement.

The Canadian government announced the end of its import ban on EU beef at the end of 2013, but that just started the process of securing commercial approval. That required agreement of protocols and procedures by the veterinary service of the exporting state and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

The end of the ban was part of an EU-wide deal brokered by the European Commission. There will be no age restriction on beef exported there.
