Department now issuing interim nitrogen and phosphorous statements via text
The Department of Agriculture, Food and The Marine is currently notifying farmers of their nitrogen and phosphorous limits for 1 January to 6 June of this year.
Farmers risk affecting their BPS if they do not adhere to nitrate regulations.

The statements will help farmers determine if they need to make changes in order to stay within the nitrates regulations limits.
Under the regulations, farmers are required to ensure nitrogen from manure does not exceed 170kg/ha per year.
Taking action

Those who may be on the way to exceeding nitrogen limits by the end of the year should take action to reduce their nitrate loading by exporting slurry or manure, or renting additional land.
A breach in nitrates regulations will affect a farmer’s Basic Payment Scheme and lead to a percentage reduction in the annual payment.
