The 2017 Recommended List of Grass and White Clover Varieties has been published by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM).

New varieties of grass and clover are tested on the national Crop Variety Evaluation Programme for suitability for cultivation in Ireland.

The annual recommended list publication details which varieties offer superior performance over existing varieties for Irish grassland farmers.

The lists also detail the economic value of grass varieties to farmers through the pasture profit index.

Efficiency

“Grass is central to our efficient dairy and livestock systems and it is essential for the continued competitiveness of the sector that farmers have access to the newest high performing grass varieties,” Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed said at the launch of publication on a dairy farm near Crookstown, Co Cork, on Tuesday.

Minister Creed said that it was appropriate that 2017 has been designated as the Year of Sustainable Grassland with initiatives such as Grass 10 and a grassland farmer of the year competition taking place.
